Targeted treatment of tumors
In radiotherapy or radiation therapy, tumors are treated with ionizing radiation. During this process, energy—calculated by the physicist—is targeted into a volume defined by the physician to destroy the tumor and any potential secondary growths (metastases).
Thanks to major advances in imaging and modern computing power, radiotherapy can now be administered in a highly targeted manner. This allows higher doses to be applied to the tumor area while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue as much as possible. This enables the treatment of larger or complexly located tumors while simultaneously reducing side effects.

What can you expect in radiotherapy?
Radiotherapy is based on precise planning and exact physical calculation of the radiation dose. The goal is to control the radiation so that the defined tumor volume is effectively treated while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue as much as possible.
Precise treatment techniques
Dose calculation is performed by specialized physicists and is individually tailored to the tumor situation. Modern procedures such as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) enable an optimized distribution of the radiation dose within the treatment field.
With Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), the patient’s positioning is continuously monitored during therapy. Organ movements, such as those caused by breathing, are taken into account and compensated for. This accuracy is a prerequisite for safe and effective treatment.
Interdisciplinary planning and implementation
Radiotherapy is carried out in close collaboration between radiotherapists, medical oncologists, and palliative care specialists. Due to our close proximity, multidisciplinary discussions are possible immediately.
Following the medical consultation, individual radiation planning can take place promptly. The treatment is carried out at the Institute for Radiotherapy at Hirslanden Klinik Aarau, which has the necessary technical facilities.
